PrairieComm Announces Industry's
First Single-chip UMTS/EDGE Baseband Processor
The PCI5210 enables 3G products for 5
continents
PrairieComm, Inc., a principle developer
and supplier of 3G baseband processors and software, today announced the availability of
the PCI5210, the industry's first single-chip UMTS/EDGE/GSM/GPRS baseband processor
solution. Created with PrairieComm's market-leading UMTS and EDGE technologies, the
PCI5210 allows wireless terminal manufacturers to design products from a single platform
for 3G markets in five continents. Production samples of the PCI5210 baseband processor
and accompanying protocol stack software are currently available and more information will
be on hand at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, France, February 23-26.
Built on the architecture of the PCI5110
UMTS/GSM/GPRS baseband processor,
the PCI5210 offers handset manufacturers a low-risk solution for their next
generation of products. With support for all UMTS/EDGE/GSM/GPRS bands
worldwide, it can operate in Europe, Asia, North America, South America, and
Australia. The combination of two 3G technologies in a single baseband
processor benefits carriers and handset suppliers by broadening the market
they are able to serve. Additionally, wireless terminal suppliers can develop
handset platforms with a significantly longer product life because the PCI5210
uniquely addresses both immediate 3G handset needs and future 3G evolution.
This is especially beneficial in areas where EDGE and UMTS will be used
concurrently.
"The worldwide wireless market is
becoming technologically unified," said
John Diehl, CEO and President, PrairieComm, Inc. "Carriers are now in a
position to offer true, worldwide roaming and the market is ready-and asking
for-a single solution to meet that need. PrairieComm is excited to utilize its
3G leadership to offer a unique solution that takes a dramatic step forward in
the globalization of 3G technology."
PrairieComm's highly integrated PCI5210
supports low cost bill-of-material
handsets and enables high-speed, data-intensive multimedia applications, high-resolution
imaging, as well as WAP and interfaces to standard Bluetooth, GPS, multimedia accelerators
and host processors. The PCI5210 supports full 384kbps transmission and reception and
Class 12 GPRS/EDGE. The chip also incorporates a USB interface with integrated transceiver
and PLL. Built on ARM's 32-bit ARM946ES RISC microprocessor core using PrairieComm's power
conscious architecture, the PCI5210 extends handset battery life with multiple built-in
power modes. With PrairieComm's multi-mode single-chip solution, 3G handset manufacturers
can design and market competitive handsets with advanced features.
